In long-trusted, tried and true political wisdom, a front-runner granting his opponents too many opportunities to knock him down is often very risky and not a wise strategy. There were a number of reasons why attending the next debate would not have been a good idea in addition to the reasons that Donald Trump mentioned in a press conference held earlier tonight where he said that he was not likely to participate in the next debate. It has now been confirmed by the Washington Post and other sources that he will definitely not be attending the debate. Instead, his campaign will be trying to quickly put together a competing event in order to raise funds for veterans and wounded warriors.
There are a number of reasons why pulling out of this debate is a smart political move.
- Trump had just got his campaign back on top of the polls in Iowa.
- A debate this close to the Iowa caucus would be the most risky for a front-runner, his campaign would therefore have the most to lose.
- Network hosting the debate had even begun openly appearing to be hostile toward the candidate. Donald Trump said network was acting childish like they were toying with him and playing games. Trump made it clear that he is not one to toy with. This action showed that he was not going to let himself get into a bad situation or allow the media to push him around.
- The refusal by Fox News to replace a moderator (Megyn Kelly), given the problems at a past debate and her continued display of negative bias towards him, presented a tremendous political risk and an absolutely needless one for a candidate that is sitting on the top of all national polls.
The Trump campaign just took a potentially precarious situation, turned the tables on a major network and will now instead be holding a positive event to raise funds for veterans and wounded warriors. Simply brilliant!!!
