It’s
understandable – and almost expected – that some Democrats would decide not to
stand and applaud President Trump’s every word at his address to Congress
Tuesday night. But there were moments that should have elevated everyone to
their feet.
Perhaps no
moment was more appropriate than when Trump paid tribute to fallen Navy SEAL
William “Ryan” Owens and honored his wife. She was applauded with an extended
ovation and it was almost impossible not to tear up as an audience member.
So it was
shocking when cameras scanned the laudatory crowd and happened upon these two
Democrats, sitting quietly:
President Trump said:
“We are blessed to be joined tonight by Carryn Owens, the widow of a U.S. Navy special operator, Senior Chief William “Ryan” Owens. Ryan died as he lived: a warrior, and a hero — battling against terrorism and securing our nation. I just spoke to General [Jim] Mattis, who reconfirmed that, and I quote, “Ryan was a part of a highly successful raid that generated large amounts of vital intelligence that will lead to many more victories in the future against our enemies.” Ryan’s legacy is etched into eternity. For as the Bible teaches us, there is no greater act of love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. Ryan laid down his life for his friends, for his country and for our freedom — we will never forget him.”
Owens’ wife wept and mouthed “I love you, baby” to heaven, the applause was deafening.
It was a long standing ovation – almost three minutes. And it’s amazing that Democrats took that moment to keep their butts warm.
