Once upon a time, it was near world wide
tradition that groom and bride, but especially bride, be virgins upon
marriage. However, as time has passed and societies have evolved, such
tradition has gone by the wayside for the most part, except for within
the ‘religion of peace.’ Well, at least the concept of the men being
virgins upon marriage within Islam has gone by the wayside, as brides
are still expected to be virgins.
Something
going in favor of the brides being virgins in Islam is the fact that
they are married off as early as the age of twelve in most cases, and if
they’ve been able to avoid being deflowered by their uncles, older
cousins, or other older male family members, bets are pretty good that
they’ll be a virgin on their wedding night.
To make sure, Muslim husbands will often check the sheets for blood after consummating their marriages. If there is blood, which is considered proof of the breaking of the hymen, then all is good. However, if there is no blood, the young brides often face physical abuse or death. Many Muslim men will shave their bride’s heads or beat them profusely, then dress them up in dirty clothes and return them to their families. Often, they’ll trade them in for one of their sisters. Sometimes, they even murder them and return the body to the family. All of these punishments are perfectly acceptable within Islam.
